UNIFEM Canada President Almas Jiwani expresses solidarity with the Governor General of Canada on the crisis in Haiti

Immediately at the outset of the earthquake in Haiti, the Canadian National Committee under the leadership of President Almas Jiwani addressed an action plan to deal with the problem in Haiti. The initial step by Ms. Jiwani and her board was to compose a letter of solidarity and conodolence for the tragic loss of life in Haiti  to the Government of Canada addressed to Her Excellency Michelle Jean (The Governor General of Canada).
.
In her letter, President Jiwani expressed, her heart-felt condolences in the words "I feel deeply for the families of the bereaved and those who have been injured in the earthquake and in its aftershocks." In addition, she also expressed her desire to travel to Haiti if her scheduling with other gender-empowerment activities for Haiti permits so that she can assist in the humanitarian efforts with UNIFEM to alleviate the suffering in the carribean country.
.
In order to assist the United Nation Development Fund for Women and the UN system's efforts in Haiti, a "Compassion for Haiti" e-card campaign was also launched by Ms. Jiwani in collaboration with the members of the board of the Canadian National Committee. In the e-card, Ms. Jiwani issued an appeal requesting the recipients to donate generously online via Canada Helps for the much needed shelters, medical and sanitation supplies for women and their families in the Haitian cities of JacMel and Port-au-Prince,  at the epicentre of the earthquake. The Compassion for Haiti campaign was also advertised via other media outlets such as the internet and online press-releases. The fund-raiser  was a success and UNIFEM Canada was the only national committee across the world to offer the incentive of tax-deductible reciepts so as to facilitate generous donations for the suffering in Haiti. The success of the compassion for Haiti Campaign was also highlighted when the Canadian National Committee
struck a deal with Government of Canada and CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) to double the donations raised until Feburary 12th, 2010.
.
In the follow-up to UNIFEM Canada's fund-raising efforts for Haiti which are continuing to this day, the President and her board-members are in the due process of briefing the governor general on the changed situation in Haiti after a month since the earthquake.
.
As of present, President Jiwani and her board is in the process of preparing a detailed report on the strategic humanitarian and physical reconstruction of Haiti. UNIFEM Canada in the report realizes the important need for psychological counsellors, medical doctors, food supplies, security personnel, methods for alleviation of poverty, shelters for violence against women, literacy campaigns and collaborative long term partnerships with local women's rights and political governance parties to ensure that gender-equality and the interests of Haitian women are not ignored in the reconstruction efforts in Haiti. Upon culmination, the brief-report will be forwarded to various agencies including the other National Committees of UNIFEM, and the Governor General of Canada and the Governement of Canada on behalf of the Canadian National Committee which will serve to further the status of women.
